Unveiling the Rise of Shubman Gill: A Journey to Cricket Stardom


Young and Gifted, Shubman Gill plays opening bats for both the Indian Premier League's Gujarat Titans and the country's cricket squad.
He was born into a Sikh household in Fazilka, Punjab, on September 8, 1999. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, was an agriculturist who was unable to follow his dream of being a cricket player.
At Shubman's eleventh birthday, he made the decision to encourage his son's love of cricket by moving the family to Mohali, close to the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.
Shubman began playing cricket for the Punjab Under-16 squad at the district level, when he amassed a career-high 330 runs in five matches. In his maiden Vijay Merchant Trophy game, he also got a double century. In the Inter-District Under-16 Punjab tournament, he and Nirmal Singh opened with a world record 587 runs. In 2014, he received the M.A. Chidambaram Trophy from the BCCI as the best cricketer under-16.
On 2017, Shubman smashed a half-century on his List A debut for Punjab against Vidarbha. Later that year, in the Ranji Trophy, he also made a century for Punjab against Bengal on his first-class debut.
At the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, he was picked as the vice captain of the Indian Under-19 squad. There, he hit 372 runs at an average of 124 and took home the Player of the Tournament trophy.
He was instrumental in India's historical fourth world championship, particularly for his perfect 102 against Pakistan in the semi-final.
In an ODI against New Zealand in January 2019, Shubman made his debut for India on the international stage.
In 2020, that he created his the first-ever ODI century against Sri Lanka.
In 2021, he smashed 208 against Australia to become the youngest Indian to score a double century in ODIs. In 2020, he also made his Test debut against Australia, leading to an historic victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with scores of 45 and 35 not out.
He became the youngest Indian opener to strike a century in a Test match when he did so in 2021 against England. In addition, he has the fastest ODI run total of 2000 runs (38 innings) and the greatest individual T20I score for India (126)
In the Indian Premier League, Shubman has also been a standout player. He played for the Gujarat Titans starting in 2022 and the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2018 to 2021.
